The Northern Ireland Dorset Sheep Breeders' Club held a very successful Spring Ram sale on Monday evening, 31st March 2014 in McClelland's Ballymena Mart. Following up on a strong interest from Northern Ireland Dorset breeders who wanted to be given the option of being able to trade pedigree rams prior to the start of the breeding season in mid April the basis for a new annual venture was sealed.

Topping the sale only event was a powerful ram lamb from the Richhill flock belonging to Ben Lamb, Richhill, Armagh. His Downkillybegs Pegasus son and out of a Downkillybegs bred ewe who was a full brother to last year's top priced male in the Carlisle Dorset show and sale sold at 580gns to new flock owner David Hamilton, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.

Thomas Wright's Ballytaggart flock from Ballymoney was next in the price stakes with the first son of the Australian ram Tattykeel Blueprint to be offered for sale and coming from a Downkillybegs ewe came in at 550gns selling to Norman and Mark Gibson, Tobermore, Magherafelt.

Then it was the Beechmount offering from Amy McConnell, Templepatrick, that came under the spot light with the next best sale price coming in at 500gns for one from her very high muscle EBV and high overall indexed stock ram Downkillybegs Ted. This one Beechmount Uncle Andy who was out of a Huish bred ewe sold to two Ballyclare flock owners, J. & C. Robson, Ballyhamage, and Shane Wilson, Legaloy.

The next two prices came from the Downkillybegs flock offering from Ballymena's William and Karen Carson. Their two myomax muscle rams sired by Olivertree Thunderbolt, sold at 480gns to Paul Saunders, Glenavy, Crumlin and another by Huish Chianti sold at 450gns to Patrick Kelly, Moneyneena, Draperstown.

The sale of ram lambs averaged £435
