Hillstown Farm Shop Glebe Rd Randalstown
The Logan family from Hillstown, Glebe Road, between Randalstown and Ahoghill village, in Co Antrim, have long been synonymous with beef and pork production in the local farming area, but in recent years having seen the opportunity for onfarm diversification they have ventured into opening and developing a farm shop at home 6 years ago.
With what started as a small enterprise to help the farm income and add more value to the farm produce it has now grown into a large farm shop, coupled along with a weekly stand at St George's Market in Belfast, and further expansion underway at the Hillstown site, with a coffee shop and cafe the next project, which is expected to be completed in September 2013.
One quality that the Logan Family have made foremost in the development of their new shop venture is that all produce is locally sourced from their vast selection of prime meats to the fruit and veg, and right through to the home baked goods, Gourmet groceries and seasonal specialities, on offer within.
With the farm shop offering a wide range of produce for any accomplished or aspiring chef, locally bred Dorset lamb takes pride of place on the Hillstown Farm Shop chill counter in both their on farm shop and the Butcher's stall at St. George's Market. Since starting to offer his consumers, Dorset lamb, Nigel has noticed a considerable increase in his sale of lamb, which he puts down to a number of reasons.
1- The fact that Dorset breed produces him a young sweet lamb all year round.
2- The Dorset lamb carcass is extremely long and well fleshed and cuts out really well.
3- The succulent flavour and mouth watering appearance of the lamb cuts.
Nigel Logan explains "the Dorset lambs fits in superbly well with our philosophy for local produce and compliments our range of beef, pork, mutton, goat and chicken". The foresight that the Logan family have shown in the development of this new venture has opened an outlet for purveyors of local Gourmet groceries, Home baked goods, local crafts and specialised prime meats and all these are available on a daily basis from the Hillstown counters at the Logan family Farm.
