Bencran Flock Viewing Day November 2015
Steven Lyons with Ewes and Lambs from his Award Winning Flock
In the middle of a very busy month of November for Northern Ireland Dorset Club members, the Club's Annual Flock viewing day was held at Bencran Farms by kind permission of S & S Lyons.
On approach to the farm at Bencran Road, Beragh, Omagh, it was like approaching an oasis of lush green pasture in the middle of natural unimproved expanse of farm land and bog as far as the eye could see.
Arriving at the farm gate there was a warm welcome from the Lyons family who greeted everyone with the option of a serving of beautiful homemade stew that was very welcome on such a wet and dreary afternoon.
The flock viewing commenced with a walk through the first of the September born lambs with their mothers, this was then followed with the later September/ October born lambs. Identifying the stand out lambs was made easy with brand markings on their sides to match them up with the details in the flock pamphlet. Everyone was impressed with the size and growth potential of the lambs and how even the breeding ewes were, even after rearing their lambs to that stage.
Everyone then moved down the road to inspect the latest Bencran lambs before moving on to see the in lamb ewe hoggets and late lambing ewes. The flock viewing then returned to the farm buildings for everyone to see the stock rams and enjoy a bit more hospitality and food.
Despite the adverse weather the visit was very well attended and those breeders that did come along to Bencran were very impressed with the standard of the entire flock. Steven and Stuart Lyons have put a lot of time and effort into the development of their Bencran flock and this is now showing dividends and rewarding the effort that was put in by the brothers.
