Dorset Premier Sale Hits High Note

Temperatures sizzled as prices soared at the NI Dorset Horn and Poll Dorset 34th Premier Show and Sale, held in McClelland's Mart, Ballymena, N Ireland, on Wednesday 26th July. Lots sold to 500Gns with strong demand from buyers both from Northern Ireland and further afield. Judging was by Ross Sizmur of the Rossiz flock in Devon and the Show and Sale was sponsored by the Northern Bank.

Breeders Graham and Mary Cubitt won the Supreme Championship with their Kildowney ewe lamb who went on to achieve the top ewe lamb price of 470Gns. Reserve Champion and winner of Opposite Sex to the Champion went to a pair of ram lambs from the Downkillybegs flock of S & W Carson, subsequently sold for 300Gns and 290Gns.

A strong entry of 36 ram lambs sold to an average of 215Gns with two of Raymond Hill's Olivertree entries each securing the day's top price of 500Gns. First prize in the ram lamb class went to Caldwell Brothers of the Granagh flock who received 340Gns. Meanwhile in the shearling ram class the first prize-winning Ballyvaddy entry achieved the top price of 240Gns.

A good turnout of ewe lambs saw a roaring trade with 93 lots selling at an average of 136Gns. Five lots achieved 300Gns or more to a top of 470Gns. Buyers from Devon and Dorset were particularly impressed with the female entries and purchased stock from a number of flocks including Kildowney and Ballytaggart.

Shearling ewes were also in demand with 24 lots averaging 160Gns. Eleven achieved 150Gns or more, five of which were Ballytaggart entries from Thomas Wright who also took the top price of 310Gns. Angus Fleming's Drumlin entry made the second highest price of 280Gns. Senior ewes averaged 157Gns for Trevor Knox's prize winning trio.

Young breeders made a big impression in both the show and sale. The Knowles brothers were delighted to receive 380Gns for their Manor Flock ram lamb who had also won third prize as part of the class for the Best Group of Three Progeny From One Sire. They continued their run of success in the ewe lamb entries where another member of their prize-winning progeny team who had also taken second place in the ewe lamb class received 400Gns.

The NI Dorset Horn and Polled Dorset Sheep Breeders Club were pleased to give a warm welcome to Ross Sizmur on his very successful judging debut. Ross was also clearly pleased with the stock he judged as he takes home the Supreme Champion along with a number of other purchases. The local club got to know Ross through their visits to the annual May Fair in Exeter and were delighted when he agreed to come over and participate in this year's Premier Show and Sale . Strong links between local and UK breeders have contributed to the development and success of the Dorset breed and will doubtless continue to play a vital role in its future.
