Dorset Breeders ‘Flock' to Ballytaggart
Members of the Dorset Horn and Poll Dorset Sheep Breeders Association enjoyed a busy weekend on 6th and 7th November. Thomas Wright from Kilraughts Road, Ballymoney owner of the renowned Ballytaggart Flock won top honours in the UK Flock Competition for 2010. This is only the second time in the history of this competition that a NI Flock has scooped this coveted award and as is customary Thomas hosted a flock viewing to coincide with the Annual General Meeting of the Dorset Sheep Breeders Association. Many members of the NI Dorset Sheep Breeders club and over twenty breeders from the mainland took the opportunity to visit Thomas’ farm and walk through the different batches of sheep, including the stock rams, this year’s crop of September born lambs, shearing ewes not yet in lamb and ewes due to lamb later in the year. Thomas pointed progeny from each ram and gave an interesting insight into the management of his flock. All who attended could not have failed to be impressed with the quality of stock on view.
The Association’s AGM was held later on Saturday afternoon and after the business meeting the group moved on to the Lodge Hotel, Coleraine to enjoy an excellent evening’s entertainment, a further opportunity to catch up with friends from near and far over a meal and the NI Club’s Annual Prize Distribution. NI Club President Mr. John McCullagh presented the prizes won over the 2010 season, at the Clubs two sales. The prizes for the flock competition were presented by Mr. Ross Sizmur and Miss Emma Littlejohn from Okehampton, Devon who had acted as judges for this year’s competition.
