N.I Breeders Excel at Dorset May Sheep Fair

Two local breeders landed the spoils at the Dorset Horn and Poll Dorset May Sheep Fair held at Exeter Market on 6th and 7th May. This show and sale is the first of the premiere events in the Dorset Sheep Breeders Association calendar 2008. In the show ring Lamb Bros- Ben and Peter, from Richill, Co. Armagh won 1st and 2nd in the Horn Dorset Ram lamb class, with the winner later judged best Horn Exhibit in the Show Championship by the President of the Association, Mr. Andrew Robinson, Wimbourne, Dorset. Both lambs were sired by Poorton Hero, the highest muscle depth horn ram in the breed. This is the second year in a row that the Richill flock belonging to Lamb Bros have produced the Best Horn Ram Exhibit at the May Fair- a huge achievement! These two ram lambs were later sold in the sale ring for 500gns (S. Driver) and 250gns (V. Core).

In the Poll Dorset Ram lamb classes the Ballytaggart Flock of Thomas Wright, Ballymoney had outstanding success. Ballytaggart Krafty won second in the single ram lamb class and Ballytaggart King and Ballytaggart Klass were judged the Best Pair of Ram lambs. This outstanding pair of ram lambs, by Downkillybegs Jethro went on to win Overall Show Champions. This is only the second time that this honour has come to Northern Ireland so congratulations to Thomas Wright on this achievement.

Reserve champions were the Shearling ram pair from J. B Dufosee’s Blackhill Flock, Wiltshire.

The action on the second day was in the sale ring where the top price of 2600 gns was paid by David Rossiter, Kingsbridge, Devon for a ram lamb sired by Blackhill Houdini, produced by renowned breeder Jim Dufosee.

The four Northern Ireland flocks which produced sheep for this prestigious sale were all rewarded with good prices. Thomas Wright’s pair of champion ram lambs sold for 900 gns (C. D Clarke) and 750 gns (to K. H May)

His second prize winning ram lamb made 1250 gns going to W. L Sandercock and he realised 850 gns for a ram lamb to C. Withers.

W and Carson realised 1100 gns for a ram lamb to J. B May and Son, 420 gns to H. Weir and 300 gns to M. Burrington.

Richard Currie, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Dorset Sheep Breeders Club sold a ram lamb for 950 gns to C. D Clarke and another for 550 gns to A. Kingdon.

Thomas Wright also sold a Shearling Ewe for 500 gns to A. Palk.
