THE Northern Ireland Dorset Horn and Polled Dorset Sheep Breeders' Club held a very successful EU export show and sale at Hilltown Farmers' Mart recently. The second annual show, sponsored by MSD Animal Health, was judged by club President, Jimmy Smyth of the Rockview flock, Ballynahinch.

Buyers flocked from both north and south of the border with a view to purchasing the excellent quality on show. Indeed, 21 percent of those sold went to the Republic of Ireland. The average price for ram lambs on the day was £332.25.

Champion was William and Karen Carson's ram lamb, which the Ballymena couple sold for 480gns to Andrew Knox from Dromara for his Braeview flock.

Richhill's Ben Lamb shared the top price spot for his second placed ram lamb, selling for export to the ROI at 500gns to Mr McIlhenny. S&S Lyons from Bencran, Omagh, also made 500gns, selling for export to D. Redhouse from Slane in Co. Meath.

Reserve Champion also went to William and Karen Carson for their top price ewe lamb which they sold to Ruth McWhirter, Collone, Armagh, for 400gns. Williams and Karen Carson's Downkillybegs pen also had the three next highest prices at 310gns, 310gns, and 300gns respectively, selling to Ernest Skuce from Co. Cork, and David Dodds from Banbridge. The pen of 10 ewe lambs from Downkillybegs averaged £301, while the ewe lamb average was £234.91 with 100% clearance.

In-lamb ewes sold well for the average price of £435.80. A pen of heavy in-lamb ewes, also from Downkillybegs, did
exceptionally well, with the top price bringing down the gavel at 500gns - the top female price selling to J. Wilson and M. Patton, from Bendooragh and Stranocum, Ballymoney. Next was a flock mate selling for 450gns to Mr Magee, Carrickbawn, Rostrevor, and a third selling at 400gns to Ben Lamb from Richhill.

The Northern Ireland Dorset Club were extremely happy with their second ever export show and sale, and would like to thank the sponsors, auctioneer Mark Stewart, mart manager Louise Robinson and the staff for their co-operation.
The club are looking forward to their next sale - an inaugural show and sale in Lisahally Mart, Co. Londonderry, on
September 13 starting at 7.30pm.
