The N.I. Dorset Sheep Breeders Club recently held its 53rd Annual General Meeting. As always this was an opportunity for the members to reflect on the year gone by and make plans for the coming show and sale season. An excellent turnout heard club chairman Mr Trevor Knox give a comprehensive report of 2013, highlighting the fact that the breed had been able to uphold its place in the market during what was a difficult year for all. He also commended the breeders for the high quality of stock being produced at the sales and Agricultural Shows.

After the business meeting was concluded and the election of office bearers and committee had taken place the guest speaker for the evening was introduced. The club were delighted to welcome Mr Colin McKee, from Key Nutrition, who has a wealth of experience in the production of feed mixes for pedigree sheep. At this time of year he had anticipated that breeders would be keen to hear about the nutritional needs of the pregnant ewe, but because of the out of season lambing attribute of the Dorset breed, many of the audience had the bulk of lambing behind them and were keen to hear about feeding the ram lamb to show and sale standard. Colin gave a most informative and entertaining illustrated presentation, which certainly held the attention of everyone present. He gave a detailed account of the ingredients which should be included in a pedigree lamb feed and the reasons why they are beneficial and the optimum ratio that is desirable. All present certainly left better informed and eager to put the knowledge into practice.

A new venture for the N.I. Dorset Club has been planned for this year. In response to demand from pedigree breeders, who often introduce the ram into the flock in early April for September lambing, a sale of rams will be held in McClellands Livestock Market, Ballymena on Monday evening 31st March 2014.
