On Friday the 12th August the NI Dorset Club held their 5th annual export show and sale in Hilltown Livestock Mart, Rathfriland, Co.Down, kindly sponsored by MSD Animal Health. Trade on the day was good with the average ram price improved on last year and an increased number of buyers ensured a 100% clearance rate.

The Champion and first place ram lamb on the day as judged by Harry Kellit, Co.Meath, was a strong twin born ram lamb entered by Robert Cousins of the Carrickdarragh flock in Annalong, Co.Down. His sire Braeview Ultracool was placed 1st in his class at Armagh and Antrim Show in 2014. The eventual purchaser was Angus Flemming of the Drumlin flock in Ballymoney who paid the sales top price of 680gns for his new stock ram. The overall reserve champion was awarded to a stylish ewe lamb entered from the Kildowney flock of G&M Cubitt, Ballymena. Sired by the imported Pembroke Timebomb this September born ewe lamb was sold for 600gns and makes her way home to the Grey family in Enniskillen.

The third highest price of the day went to lot 2 entered by the Mainevalley flock of Master Cameron Carson. This ram lamb sired by a myostatin gene carrier English bred ram was placed 3rd in the large ram lamb class and was sold to E Skuce Co.Cork for 520gns. Other leading prices in the ram lamb section were G&M Cubitt 360 gns to T Marner, Hilltown and Ben Lamb, Richhill, 330gns to Mr Hughes, Kircubbin.

Two shearling rams entered by the Lisnafillan Flock of K&L Weir, Ballymena achieved 440gns to T Marner and 350 gns to S&E Cunningham, Kilkeel respectively.

Ewe lamb trade was strong with G&M Cubitt’s second entrant fetching 320 gns to D. Aiken, Co.Donegal. W&K Carson of the Downkillybegs flock in Ballymena achieved 300gns twice for two ewe lamb entrants to E.Skuce and D. Aiken.

In lamb ewe trade was topped by a super aged ewe placed first in her class and entered by the Tardree flock of J&I Wilson, she realised 310gns to P Brannigan, Hilltown. The Tardree flock was also responsible for the first prize shearling ewe which later sold for 190 gns also to P Brannigan.

The Northern Ireland Dorset Club greatly appreciates the continued support of MSD Animal Health, who once again generously sponsored this event. The club also extends thanks to auctioneer Mark Stewart, veterinarian Frazer Tweed and the staff at Hilltown Mart whose assistance greatly contributed to the success of the day in which there was a 100% clearance rate.

The next date in the club calendar is the Autumn show and sale which will take place on Wednesday 12th October 2015 at Ballymena Livestock Market.
